A dramatic signed surrealist artwork by American artist William Hugh Ferguson (1905–1985), depicting a chaotic horse-drawn carriage accident along a rural roadway. The composition brings together an overturned carriage, scattered wheels, a horse, and fragments of wreckage against an expansive, windswept landscape.
The scene features a striking combination of deep blue, teal, moss green, yellow, and orange, with dense black linework extending throughout the composition. A fiery glow illuminates the central wreckage, creating a powerful contrast with the cooler tones of the surrounding countryside. The roadway stretches into the foreground, its uneven surface rendered through sweeping, overlapping lines that echo the turbulence of the sky.
The treatment of the subject blends recognizable imagery with abstracted forms and dramatic movement. Rather than illustrating the accident in a conventional manner, the composition creates an almost dreamlike interpretation of the event, with the surrounding landscape appearing to participate in the chaos.
Ferguson was born in Reading, Pennsylvania, and studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and in Paris. His work was influenced by European Surrealism, and he became known for imaginative figurative compositions and watercolor painting. He exhibited regularly during the 1930s and 1940s.
The artwork bears a William H. Ferguson signature at the lower right and was acquired from a collection containing additional works by Ferguson, including original drawings.
Presented beneath glass in a molded gold-tone wooden frame with wide gray matting and a narrow cream-and-gold inner border.
