This vintage Steelcase task chair, circa 1970s, is a confirmed and labeled example of one of American contract furniture design’s most enduring classics. The original Steelcase manufacturer’s label remains on the underside of the shell — a meaningful detail of provenance in a market increasingly populated by unlabeled and misattributed vintage seating.

Produced at Steelcase’s Grand Rapids, Michigan facility, the 454 series chair features a molded ABS plastic shell in deep charcoal black with integrated open armrests — a form that synthesizes mid-century shell chair logic with a distinctly 1970s architectural confidence. The seat and back are upholstered in original caramel gold boucle, a warm, fiber-rich textile that was the hallmark of high-specification contract seating of the era and that has proven to be one of the most aesthetically durable upholstery choices of the decade.

The swivel mechanism and height adjustment are functional. The four-star cast metal base is finished in period-appropriate dark bronze tone and rides on original rolling casters. This chair is offered in its original, unrestored configuration — shell, upholstery, hardware, and label all as-found.
