Vintage Maitland-Smith Chippendale Carved Armchair with Ball-and-Claw Feet

A richly detailed vintage Chippendale Revival armchair by Maitland-Smith, featuring an elaborate pierced back, scrolling arms, carved cabriole legs, and traditional ball-and-claw feet. The original label beneath the seat identifies the chair as designed by Maitland-Smith Ltd. and hand made in the Philippines.

The tall open back centers on an intricate pierced splat composed of interlocking ribbon and scroll forms. Carved floral rosettes punctuate the openwork pattern, while additional foliate decoration appears across the shaped crest rail and upper frame.

Substantial arms terminate in carved scrolls and are supported by shaped uprights with further decorative carving. The upholstered seat is covered in a muted blue-gray geometric textile, providing a restrained contrast against the richly toned wood.

Below, the front cabriole legs feature pronounced carved knees with scrolling foliate ornament and terminate in traditional ball-and-claw feet. The combination of carved ornament, pierced construction, scrolling forms, and cabriole legs creates a strong Chippendale Revival profile.
