This vintage magazine rack and side table is a great example of the decorative side of Mid-Century furniture, combining geometric structure with the reflective qualities of glass and a warm gold/brass-tone finish.
The design is particularly interesting from the side. Angled supports cross into an elongated X-shaped form, while curved metal rails and rounded glass surfaces soften the geometry. The lower glass shelf gives the piece additional usable surface area, while the integrated magazine compartment provides convenient storage for books, magazines, newspapers, or other reading material.
The overall design fits comfortably within the Hollywood Regency vocabulary of brass-tone metal, glass, strong geometry, and decorative contrast. It can work particularly well beside a sofa or lounge chair, but its compact proportions also make it useful as a bedroom accent table, reading table, or occasional table.
The cream-colored textured inset panels are one of the piece’s more unusual details.
