Vintage Broyhill / Lenoir Chair Company Sculptural High-Back Armchairs – Pair

This pair of vintage Broyhill / Lenoir Chair Company armchairs has an incredible silhouette, with dramatically tall sculpted backs that make them much more interesting than a conventional pair of dining chairs.

Each back begins with a broad, gently curved crest before narrowing dramatically toward the seat. Large open areas along either side emphasize the shape and give the chairs a surprisingly light appearance despite their substantial height.

The rest of the design is comparatively restrained, with gently shaped arms, squared front supports, simple seat rails, and long tapered legs. Muted green upholstered seats add a little color while allowing the wood frames and unusual backs to remain the focal point.

The original manufacturer’s label is still attached underneath and identifies Lenoir Chair Company of Lenoir, North Carolina. Lenoir Chair Company was founded by J.E. Broyhill and formed the foundation of the furniture manufacturing operation that developed into Broyhill Furniture Industries.

We’re leaving the specific Broyhill collection unidentified rather than making an attribution that isn’t supported by the surviving label.

Offered as a pair, these would make excellent host chairs at a dining table or could easily stand alone as sculptural occasional seating.
