Pair of Vintage Mid-Century Modern High-Back Cane Dining Chairs, Stamped Denmark

A distinctive pair of vintage mid-century modern dining chairs featuring exceptionally tall architectural backs, narrow woven cane center panels, sculpted wood frames, upholstered seats, and long tapered legs. Each chair bears a “DENMARK” stencil beneath the seat.

The dramatic high-back construction is the defining element of the design. A slender woven cane panel rises vertically through the center of each chair and is surrounded by elongated sections of open space. This restrained use of cane creates visual texture while allowing the overall frame to remain remarkably light and open.

The cane panels are individually framed and subtly shaped, widening toward the upper portion of the backs. Broad, gently bowed crest rails transition into long outer supports, with sculpted openings creating a fluid relationship between the cane panels and surrounding frames.

Below the seats, clean rails and finely tapered legs provide a simple counterpoint to the expressive upper sections. The seats are upholstered in broad alternating cream and champagne-toned stripes, adding a soft contrast against the darker wood.

With their unusually tall proportions, woven details, and sophisticated use of negative space, these chairs have a particularly strong mid-century modern presence. Suitable as dining chairs or independently as desk, occasional, or statement seating.
