Pair of Mid-Century Modern High-Back Cane Dining Armchairs, Stamped Denmark

A distinctive pair of vintage mid-century modern dining armchairs featuring exceptionally tall architectural backs, narrow woven cane center panels, sculpted wood frames, and upholstered seats. Each chair bears a “DENMARK” stamp beneath the seat.

The dramatic back design is the defining feature of the pair. A slender woven cane panel rises vertically through the center of each chair, surrounded by elongated sections of open space. This restrained use of cane emphasizes the height of the frame while keeping the chairs visually light.

A gently bowed crest rail transitions into long outer back supports, with subtle shaping throughout the frame adding to the chairs’ refined modernist appearance. The arms extend outward from the rear supports before curving toward the front of the seat. Straight seat rails and long tapered legs complete the streamlined lower frames.

The seats are upholstered in broad alternating cream and champagne-toned stripes, providing a lighter contrast against the darker wood.

With their unusually tall proportions and strong use of negative space, these chairs have an especially sophisticated mid-century profile. They would work beautifully as captain’s chairs at either end of a dining table or independently as desk, occasional, or statement armchairs.
