A significant and beautifully executed walnut two-tier end table by John Stuart Inc. of Grand Rapids and New York — fully authenticated by the original brass medallion label present on the underside — and distinguished by an extraordinary vitreous enamel inlay set flush into the walnut top. John Stuart Inc. was one of the most respected American furniture companies of the mid-20th century, known for high design standards, exceptional material quality, and collaborations with major designers including Paul Frankl, Peter Hvidt, Bert England, and Milo Baughman.
The enamel inlay is the defining feature: an eye-shaped medallion of vitreous enamel in blue, white, gold, and aqua tones, depicting an abstract organic motif with the gestural quality of mid-century studio craft. This combination — fine furniture production incorporating the work of a studio enamel artist — was a specific and relatively rare feature of the most ambitious American furniture of the 1960s, reserved for makers who understood that furniture could be an art object as much as a functional piece. The enamel is vivid, intact, and extraordinarily beautiful.
The walnut form itself is architecturally accomplished: a rectangular top with chamfered corners sits above four dramatically splayed tapered legs with a waisted profile — slightly narrowing at mid-point before tapering to a fine point — connected at the base by a lower display shelf with its own chamfered corners and gently concave sides. The leg design creates a visual dynamism and sculptural presence that lifts this table well above generic production. The walnut is richly grained throughout.
Fully labeled John Stuart Inc. pieces are actively collected and perform strongly across all secondary market platforms, with the enamel inlay detail adding further distinction and collector appeal. A genuinely significant piece of American MCM furniture history, ready for immediate placement in any well-considered interior.
