Barrel-form rattan lounge chair with elaborate arched and diamond lattice back, matching ottoman, and original floral cushions — in the manner of Ficks Reed.
A rattan lounge chair and matching ottoman in the manner of Ficks Reed, the American manufacturer whose Cincinnati production defined the upper register of domestic rattan furniture through the twentieth century. The barrel-form chair carries a continuous curved back and arm profile in bentwood rattan, the frame sweeping from floor to crest in a single generous arc. The back splat presents an elaborate composition of arched and diamond lattice rattan elements — arched forms at the lower register transitioning to a repeating diamond and X pattern above — all joined at wrapped rattan intersections. The legs and principal structural members are bundled rattan poles, the construction method that characterizes quality American rattan production and distinguishes it from lesser import work.
The ottoman follows the same vocabulary: rectangular frame with rounded corners, reed-wrapped apron panel, bundled rattan legs, generous cushion. Both pieces include their original floral cushions — a large-scale rose and peony pattern in burgundy, rose, and green — which present a natural reupholstery opportunity for a buyer wanting to personalize the set in their own fabric.
