English Edwardian Mahogany Kidney Writing Desk

Dating to approximately 1900–1910, this English Edwardian kidney writing desk is a confident example of Sheraton Revival cabinetmaking at the upper end of the trade market. Constructed throughout in mahogany, it carries double-line satinwood and boxwood string inlay applied with precision to all exterior surfaces — drawer fronts, shaped back panels, apron, and square-tapered legs — front and reverse alike.

Nine drawers — four graduated per pedestal, one to the central frieze — are fitted with brass bail handles and keyhole escutcheons. The square-tapered legs terminate in turned hardwood caster wheels, a period construction detail that distinguishes genuine early Edwardian production from the composition and rubber fittings that replaced wooden wheels in later decades. The fully finished reverse elevation, with matching inlaid mahogany panels, confirms this desk was conceived as a freestanding object of significance. The curved end panels, where the double-line inlay follows the contour of the shaped apron, represent a particularly fine point of the maker’s execution.
