Paul T. Frankl is among the most important American furniture designers of the twentieth century. Born in Vienna and trained in the European modernist tradition, he became one of the defining voices of American design — his collaborations with Johnson Furniture Company of Grand Rapids in the 1940s and 1950s producing some of the most architecturally resolved furniture of the postwar era. This ebonized mahogany round extension dining table, retailed through John Stuart, Inc. of New York, is attributed to Frankl on the basis of close comparison with confirmed examples from the same designer, manufacturer, and retail relationship. The original Mahogany Association certification label on the underside confirms genuine mahogany construction throughout.

The base alone makes this attribution credible. Paired vertical posts in deeply ebonized mahogany sweep down to dramatically curved arching feet, connected by clean horizontal members that complete the architectural composition. It is geometric without being cold, sculptural without being decorative — exactly the formal balance consistent with Frankl’s mature work. The top is round when closed and extends to a generous oval with the addition of leaves, the deep ebonized finish carried through every surface consistently. Age-appropriate wear is present on the top; the base presents in outstanding condition.
