Brno Flat Bar Chrome Cantilever Armchairs | Pair | 1970s–80s

A compelling and well-matched pair of flat bar chrome cantilever armchairs in the manner of Ludwig Mies van der Rohe's Brno chair — one of the most architecturally significant, enduringly beautiful, and actively collected chair designs of the 20th century. This pair represents quality production in that tradition.

The flat bar chrome frame is the more architecturally austere of the two Brno variants — where the tubular version has a softness and roundness, the flat bar reads as pure geometry in chrome, all precise angles and flat planes broken only by the sweeping cantilever arc that is the chair's defining structural and sculptural gesture. The cantilever base sweeps forward in a continuous curve from the rear uprights before returning to the flat rectangular floor plane, creating the visual tension and physical spring that makes cantilever seating so compelling. The chrome is polished mirror bright with the warm patina of age.

The back pad floats on the rear chrome uprights and the seat cushion sits within the frame supported by the curved front arc — exactly as in the canonical Mies design. Both are upholstered in the original blue cross-pattern fabric in deep navy — a graphic, period-appropriate textile of the kind used in quality contract and residential production of the period. Reupholstery in black, white, or cognac leather would be the natural contemporary update. Both chairs are structurally sound and well-matched.
