Antique Ritter Model C Adjustable Dental Operating Stool, 1930s Industrial

A distinctive antique dental operating stool manufactured by the Ritter Dental Manufacturing Company of Rochester, New York. Dating to approximately the 1930s–1940s, this American-made industrial stool combines specialized mechanical engineering with the streamlined aesthetics of early 20th-century medical furniture.

The stool features a circular black upholstered seat supported by a metal framework with an integrated openwork footrest. A slender height-adjustable metal post extends downward into a turned wooden column, creating an attractive contrast between warm wood tones and darker industrial materials.

The substantial domed metal pedestal incorporates a pivoting mechanism designed to accommodate movement while seated. Originally intended for dental practitioners, this unusual construction allows the stool to lean and shift position while maintaining its distinctive upright form.

The central shaft provides adjustable seat height through a telescoping arrangement, further distinguishing the design from conventional fixed-height industrial seating.

An original manufacturer’s plate remains attached to the lower wooden column, identifying the piece as a Ritter Operating Stool, Model C, manufactured in Rochester, New York. The labeled construction provides a direct connection to the history of American dental equipment and the development of ergonomic professional seating.

The stool’s combination of a circular upholstered seat, integrated foot support, wooden column, and sculptural metal pedestal reflects the functional character of Art Deco-era industrial design.

An attractive and unusual addition to an artist’s studio, drafting area, industrial loft, home office, or collection of antique medical furnishings, the stool offers both historic interest and a distinctive decorative presence.
