 A fully carved Chinese export hardwood armchair — dragon crest rail, foo dog arm terminals, carved apron and cabriole legs — late Qing period export production of exceptional ambition.

A Chinese export carved hardwood armchair of exceptional decorative ambition, dating to the late 19th to early 20th century. Every surface carries carved decoration — the crest rail, back splat, back stiles, arm supports, arm terminals, seat apron, and cabriole legs — in a consistent program of dragons, foo dogs, clouds, lotus, and wave scrollwork drawn from the Chinese imperial decorative tradition and adapted for the Western export market.

The crest rail presents a fully three-dimensional dragon in high relief emerging from clouds and foliage. The central back splat is a pierced carved panel of dragon and cloud forms flanked by deeply undercut scrollwork on the back stiles. The arm terminals are carved foo dog heads fully executed in the round — individuated figural carvings that required considerable skill and that distinguish this chair from lesser examples where such details are only suggested. The shaped seat apron carries a continuous carved dragon and cloud program around its full perimeter. The carved cabriole legs terminate in ball feet on brass casters — the Western structural vocabulary combined with Chinese imperial ornament that defines the finest Chinese export furniture of the late Qing period.

The hardwood is richly patinated in a deep reddish-brown tone consistent with Chinese rosewood or related dark hardwood used in quality export workshop production. No maker identified. A piece suited to a serious collection of Chinese decorative arts, an interior of genuine eclecticism, or any setting that requires an object of real sculptural presence and historical weight.
