Antique American Classical Carved Wood Rocking Chair with Floral Needlepoint Seat

A distinctive antique American Classical style rocking chair featuring a sculptural carved wood frame, sweeping scroll arms, an ornamental open back, and floral needlepoint upholstered seat.

The chair’s large scrolling arms immediately define its silhouette. Each sweeps forward from the back in a broad curve before turning inward into an open scroll above the front support. Their exaggerated movement is balanced by the tall, architectural construction of the back.

A broad shaped upper tablet is crowned with carved foliate decoration terminating in floral rosettes at either end. Below, a substantial vase-shaped central splat occupies the open back, framed by long curved outer supports.

The generously padded seat is upholstered in cream-colored needlepoint centered with a traditional floral bouquet incorporating pink roses, purple blossoms, and green foliage. A bowed front seat rail follows the rounded profile of the cushion.

Long curved wood rockers complete the design, echoing the sweeping lines found throughout the frame.

With its combination of carved Classical ornament, dramatic scroll arms, open-back construction, and floral needlepoint, this rocker makes an especially strong statement piece for a living room, library, bedroom, reading area, or collected traditional interior.
