Produced by Aimone Manufacturing Company of New York and dating to approximately 1900–1919, this Martha Washington sewing cabinet is constructed in figured satinwood with hand-painted polychrome decoration in the Adam Revival manner. Aimone operated in New York City from the late 1870s, beginning as an importer of English, French, and Italian furniture before establishing domestic production at factories on East 22nd and 23rd Streets. The firm produced decorative furniture in figured woods with painted ornament, and this sewing cabinet reflects that output directly.
The form follows the classic Martha Washington configuration: a three-drawer central case flanked by curved open basket wing compartments, raised on six turned and tapering legs, with a three-section hinged top and crossbanded borders. Each of the three drawer fronts carries an individual hand-painted composition of ribbon swags, rose clusters, bow motifs, and foliate ornament in greens, pinks, and gilt, centered on brass oval-plate pulls in the Hepplewhite manner. Painted foliate sprigs ornament the stiles, and painted acanthus leaf decoration at each leg capital extends the decorative program from case to floor. The satinwood veneer displays a pronounced ribbon-stripe figure across all principal surfaces. The original brass Aimone maker’s medallion is present on the underside of the top.
