A 19th century American Empire four-drawer chest in flame mahogany. The projecting top drawer above three graduated drawers of increasing depth, flanked by scrolled pilaster columns curving from cornice to platform base, and terminating in outward-scrolling feet — the canonical American Empire chest form as it developed in the workshops of New England and the Mid-Atlantic states during the nineteenth century.
The drawer fronts are veneered in crotch flame mahogany, the feathered figure of each front individually composed for maximum decorative effect. Pine secondary wood throughout. The chest carries octagonal glass knobs. No maker identified.
A piece of genuine period character suited to a bedroom, hallway, or any interior engaging with American decorative arts.
